It is that time of the year. May is full of all “sensations”, as it brings so many milestones. For some mom this year, they are celebrating their first mother’s day. For some mom, her firstborn is walking through the infant garden graduation stage. For some mom, her son is getting that high school diploma. For some, the university is finishing and the “real world” is starting. And even if a child does not have one of these great milestones, it is very likely to go to the next grade or in the next phase.
This is an important moment of transition for mothers, since their children take the next steps of their lives. For many, it can be difficult as children advance from one stage of life to the next, but we must remember that they only give us children as a loan of the Lord; Therefore, any time we have with them is a blessing. As each transition period occurs, we must determine in our hearts to free them to the Lord.
In the Old Testament, Hannah had longed for a child. She had been sterile. In 1 Samuel 1, he talks about how Hannah had gone to sacrifice food and had moved away to pray.
“Hannah was in deep anguish, crying bitterly while praying to the Lord. And he made this vote: ‘Oh, the armies of the Lord of heaven, if you look at my pain and answer my prayer and give me a son, then I will return it to you. It will be yours for his whole life …” 1 Samuel 1: 10-11a: 10-11a
Hannah prayed to the Lord for a child and promised to return the child if his request was granted.
“When Elkanah lay with Hannah, the Lord recalled his plea, already due time gave birth to a son. She called him Samuel, because he said: ‘I asked the Lord for him'”. 1 Samuel 1: 19B-20
Hannah’s prayer was answered. She had given birth to a child.
“‘Lord, can you remember me?’ Hannah asked.
Hannah had longed for this child. She wanted a child so much that he basically negotiated with the Lord. And God granted his request and Hannah reached his promise. She returned the child with whom the Lord had blessed her. Hannah did not see this child as his, but as something God had given him. Many times, we are not called to give our children physically to the Lord, but how is our heart condition when it comes to raising? Do we parents like someone who wants to cling to their children, or as someone who has open hands for God to use them as it considers it convenient? Do we live with the knowledge that these children lend us to God and really belong to him? Do we give everything we have to be used for your glory and father in a way to provide love and gratitude?
When entering each new phase or transition, we cling to the fact that these children are not our own, but we must return them. We must be with open and open -minded hands to the plans that God has for them. He has given them to us only so that we can return them.
