Customizing Store Bought Jewelry Drawer Inserts (And Saving Over $500 On A Custom Jewelry Drawer Insert)

A couple of days ago, I showed them the jewelry drawer with the upper glass that I built in my dressing room. It is a fairly large drawer with interior dimensions of 41 5/8 ″ x 15 ″.

And he has a glass countertop on him so that everything is shown when the drawer is closed.

I had seen all kinds of options for jewelry drawers inserts, from Amazon options to custom options. I really hoped to have something customized for the drawer, but I quickly realized that it was not going to be an option for me. I found a website where you can design yours, but first, your custom options only climbed 36 “wide. And if I am going to spend money on something custom made, it had to adapt to the entire width of the drawer.

But I started playing with his online customizer just to have an idea of the price of something like that. Let’s say I stopped designing (that is, I stopped adding compartments to the design) when the price exceeded $ 500. There is simply no way to justify paying more than $ 500 for an insert of personalized design jewelry drawer when I only store economic jewels. If I were a fine jewelry collector, I could probably justify the expense both to show it. But literally, the only expensive jewelry piece I have is my wedding ring. Everything else is economic and fun jewels that I buy in random places: drug stores, hobby lobby, Amazon, etc.) when I see something that I like.

Then I thought I could build my own compartments. In that way, I could build it to adjust to the precise dimensions of the drawer. So I picked up some of these Alamo de Home Depot boards. These are 2.5 ″ x 48 ″.

And they have 1/4 ″ thick, which I thought made them perfect for this project.

My idea was to reduce them to 3/4 ″ strips, cut them to the necessary lengths and build a grid inside the drawer. Then I wanted to stain the interior of the drawer, as well as the grid, in a very light and warm brown spot color.

But it didn’t take me for a long time to realize that I would never gather these pieces in a way that was satisfied. I tried to assemble them with hot glue, but I couldn’t wear enough glue to keep them together. If I used too much glue, you would crush the sides, and then those pieces would not accept spots. If I used very little, they would not remain united. I also tried to use wood glue, but that dries so slowly that I would ruin the first section when I started trying to assemble the second section.

But this was not one of those projects. With all the great projects that must still be carried out in the dressing room (such as painting the cabinets and building the central island), the last thing I wanted to do was spend my time doing this random project that had been approximately 95% sure that I would not even be satisfied when it was finished.

Online online I was. I have to admit that for about an hour last night, I returned to the idea of a personalized insert. Actually, I was very tempted when I found this company that would make personalized acrylic inserts for any purpose that occurs to it. There are times when paying a high price for something is worth it for me. But again, due to the size of the drawer, I knew I would be looking at a price of several hundred dollars. I just couldn’t do it.

So last night I looked in Amazon up and under the inserts that I thought they could work in my drawer. I could not find the perfect size (not shocking), but finally decided to go with this set of four in a clear gray (Affiliate link). Each set comes with four different grid sizes.

I knew I wanted two of the same size since most of my earrings are quite small. And I wasn’t sure what other sizes I wanted to use, so I ended up ordering two sets. (I love the delivery of Amazon’s night! Hurra for immediate gratification! I asked before going to bed, and went to my door when I woke up. 😀)

The color is a bit darker than I expected, but they are very well done and resistant.

In fact, I am quite excited by how they look! They do not fit perfectly, but surely exceeds more than $ 500 for a personalized insert.

Even with the purchase of two sets, I still paid less than $ 100 for them.

Four of them fit my drawer, and my plan is to combine a paint sample size so that it can paint the entire inside of the drawer of the same color.

There is a 1 inch gap at the front, but that is not even shown when the drawer is closed. So that does not bother me at all.

And since I have four trays left, I am considering trying to reduce one of the additional trays (the grids are removable) to complete the additional space of 3.5 inches in the middle to obtain a completely personalized size and have the entire drawer, from left to right, full of trays. I have no idea if I can do it, but you can be sure that I will try!

Anyway, I am very satisfied with how this is resulting. I think once they paint the inside of the drawer to match the trays, it will look fantastic! And, of course, you still plan to add tape lights inside the drawer and inside the collar compartment.

I am also trying to solve the details of how I want to finish the storage of necklace extraction. They had some great ideas about that, so I’m still wearing the options.

Update: I did it! I used one of the additional trays, I cut them and gather it again to fill the additional space. And now I have what seems like a totally personalized jewelry drawer with inserts that perfectly fit 41 4/8 width from my drawer. While having a personalized insert made for this drawer would have cost me more than $ 500, this option Using these Amazon trays (Affiliate link) and cut one of the trays to adapt to me that they cost me $ 65.88 for two sets, more than an hour of time to rebuild one of the trays for a perfect adjustment.

It was really very simple to do. These trays are made of a combination of thin cardboard and heavy cardboard, so all this could be done with scissors and a razor blade. First I eliminated this cardboard strip covered with velvet around an interior, it will remove to reuse.

I removed it very gently so that none of the velvets came out, and so that the cardboard would not be folded when I removed it.

And then could easily separate the sides from the bottom of the tray. I used a razor blade to cut the bottom of 3.5 inches that I needed to fill the space.

And then I put the lower piece in place and then put the two long side pieces instead.

Then I used my razor blade to cut the pieces of the upper and lower side. This was the most complicated part of the entire process because they had to be ingested. Making a corner grooved with a razor blade is not the easiest to do, but I only worked with him patiently until I got it to fit. It wasn’t perfect, but it was good enough. Once the cardboard was cut in size, I carefully cut the velvet with scissors to give clean edges in the corners. And then I used hot glue to paste those final pieces to the side pieces.

And finally, I cut those interior strips to fit and hit them to give it a finished appearance. It was a fairly simple process. And look how good it looks now! I have a completely personalized adjustment, and I saved at least $ 430 about what a personalized insert would have cost for this drawer!

I still need to paint the inside of the drawer to match the inserts, and I think it will look so good once everything is ready.

I know it’s probably dumb, but this is one of those little details that excites me so much. I like things to look personalized, but I do not always like to pay the price of customs made. That’s why I do a lot of DIY. But there is no way that I would like to make all the velvet covered insert from scratch. This was a good commitment between bought in the store and custom. And you can’t exceed that price!

This is how it looked before:

And here is the personalized appearance …

It is a small detail, but it is much better!

We will be happy to hear your thoughts
